This bed was bought in a sale and was in need of some “tender loving care” and replacement of two missing stretchers.
- The stretchers were made in beech, dovetailed to match the existing support blocks and lightly stained to resemble the colour of the under frame.
- Any veneer that had lifted or bubbled was repaired using a hot iron and damp cloth. This is the advantage of older furniture as the original animal glue allows it to be warmed and re-stuck.
- The whole bed was given a good clean using “John’s mix”. This removes unwanted wax and grime in preparation for the next stage. Care was taken with the guilding.
- A light stain was applied to bring the bed up to uniform colour.
- A coat of sanding sealer to seal the stain.
- The first application of bees wax was applied using fine wire wool to remove any “nibs” left by the sanding sealer.
- The final coats, three in all, of wax were applied using a soft cloth and burnished with a soft brush to give a pleasing satin finish.
- Returned to a satisfied customer
