Upholstered Carver Chair

This pretty chair came to me looking very sad. One of the arms had broken away from the back, the legs were unstable, the seat was in tatters and the webbing had lost its support and therefore need to be replaced.

The first task was to dismantle the chair into its component parts which would ensure that the joints could be re-glued correctly, using animal glue, after affecting a suitable repair to the arm. After completion the show wood was cleaned, stained and French Polished.

Upholstering then began with replacement webbing and a Hessian base padded with coir (artificial horse hair), calico and skin wadding before adding the top cover and gimp trimming. Finally the woodwork was given three coats of bees’ wax polish burnished to a very pleasing satin sheen.
